Our Churches are in Trouble

Liberalism has crept into our churches today. Too many of them are more concerned with style, acceptance, and popularity than they are with accuracy in the word of God. They’re more concerned with comfort, not saying things that will offend the congregation, political correctness. I’ve had an honor of singing in my church’s choir for about 7-8 years now and we were able to visit lots of different churches. I’ve noticed, when looking around, that no one carries bibles to church anymore. Majority of the churches, the men in the choir were 90% homosexual. When I turn on my television to see one of the more popular churches, I noticed that not one scripture was ever read, just a bunch of stories and principles. When I visit mega-type churches it seems more like a show where the audience comes to be entertained rather than be a part of the church. What’s happening to our churches?!?! (Luke 18:8 “I tell you that He will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will He really find faith on the earth?”)

There are lots of false teachers and false teaching in too many of our churches today. We, as Christians, must begin to fight for the faith. (Jude 1:1-4 “Jude, a bondservant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, To those who are called, sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ: Mercy, peace, and love be multiplied to you. Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints. For certain men have crept in unnoticed, who long ago were marked out for this condemnation, ungodly men, who turn the grace of our God into lewdness and deny the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ.”) This letter was written to the saints who were called and preserved in Christ. We must contend for The Faith, not any faith but The Faith. We can’t just put our differences aside and be buddies. We contend for the foundational truths of the Gospel b/c those differences may send some people to Hell. They are false teachings and lies.

The faith in Christ is set in stone. There’s no changing or tweaking it. There’s no picking and choosing, based off of our feelings, what part of the bible we follow or believe. We believe and teach the entire Gospel, no more and no less. We believe in an objective faith, not a subjective faith. We must stick with what scripture teaches. When we add to it, it becomes legalism. When we subtract from it, it then becomes liberalism. We need to just stay on the straight line and not venture off of it. But what’s the line? As my pastor, Ray Berryhill, would say, “I’m so glad you asked.” The line is we are saved by justification by faith alone, in Christ alone.

Jude said the faith was delivered to us by God so we need to treat the faith as a highly precious commodity. It was delivered by Him once and for all so there’s no reason for us to believe a passage would be replaced by someone who claimed to have had a new vision from God. There should not be more than 1 book of revelation. This faith was delivered to the saints but who are the saints? “I’m so glad you asked.” The saints are only those who are in Christ.

Jude says these people have snuck into the Church unnoticed. He says these ungodly people have traits of behaving in an obscene manner. You see, there are still moral laws that God expects Christians to obey. Some of these believe they don’t need to be any different from someone who doesn’t know the Lord b/c they say they’re saved. They lack restraint. Then you have those types who deny our only Lord, Jesus Christ. This group of people is your so-called “thinkers”. Some of these people don’t even believe in the Trinity. These false teachers are spiritual terrorists. Jude was speaking of the professional preachers of his time but the word of God is timeless. As a matter of fact, this book could have been written this month b/c of how relevant it is today. Those of us in Christ even need to be careful while reading Christian books, listening to Christian radio, and watching Christian television. Just b/c something has a “Christian” title doesn’t necessarily mean that it is.

We have to realize that God’s abounding grace doesn’t give us the opportunity to sin. You can’t say that you can sin as much as you want to now b/c it’s going to all be forgiven later. No!!! Your heart is not right, nor is your understanding of the Gospel. Does not the word says that God looks at the heart. (1 Samuel 16:7 “But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees;for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”) These people are scoffers. They don’t even produce arguments, they just make fun of you for having one. (Jude 1:17-19 “But you, beloved, remember the words which were spoken before by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ: 18 how they told you that there would be mockers in the last time who would walk according to their own ungodly lusts. 19 These are sensual persons, who cause divisions, not having the Spirit.”)

So how are we to be? “I’m so glad you asked.” (Jude 1:20 “But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit,”) Build yourself up in the ”holy faith” in Jesus Christ, who is the only holy One. This is our hope, our only hope. We must keep hope in Christ b/c He keeps us from falling from the faith. We have to be more discerning when visiting churches, reading books and blogs, watching TV and movies, visiting websites, and listening to people. We can do this by keeping ourselves in the love of God. (Jude 1:21 “keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.”) Ignorance is not bliss in the kingdom of God. Please believe, we are at war, not against flesh and blood, but against spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. We must contend so that the truth exposes the counterfeit, the Lord is glorified, and people are saved and not lead to eternal damnation. Our churches are in trouble and since we, those who are in Christ, are the Church then that means we are in trouble. So let’s begin to use daily discernment to weed out God’s truth versus Satan’s counterfeit that is present in our churches today.
